Victorian Essential Learning Standards

The curriculum at Milleara Primary School follows the the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS), which outline what is crucial for all students to learn from Prep to Year 10. Teachers use the Standards to plan their teaching and learning programs, including assessment and reporting of student progress.

The Standards outline what is important for students to learn during their time at school.

The Standards ensure that students continue learning traditional subjects such as English, mathematics, science, humanities, languages and the arts. Within these subjects, students learn the physical, personal and social skills they need in life.

At Milleara we provide a comprehensive curriculum.

In the Early Years we have a strong belief in developing sound foundations in Literacy and Numeracy. It is also a time when we ensure that students become confident and see themselves as learners. Reading Recovery is provided in Grade One for those students deemed at risk of falling critically behind in literacy skills. Social and interpersonal skills are nutured to ensure a happy and harmonious school environment.

As students move through the school more time is spent on broadening their knowledge and skills. Computer research and presentation skills are developed and utilised across the curriculum. As students learn at different rates, students are constantly assessed and programs developed to meet their individual needs. Children in Grades 3 to 6 are able to attend a camp each year. Students are provided with the opportunity to develop leadership and citizenship skills. Students participate in Interschool Sports competitions and develop team skills and responsibilty to others.

Milleara has a strong belief that students learn in different ways and that they have strengths lying in different intelligences. We aim to provide opportunities for all students to celebrate success in their learning by providing a wide range of learning experiences.

Milleara provides written reports for students in June and December. There is a Meet the Teacher meeting at the beginning of the school year and a Parent Teacher Interview following the mid-year written report. Parents are always welcome to contact the school to arrange a visit to discuss any concerns that they have regarding their child.

The school report card is designed by the Department and shows how far your child has progressed during the year, and compares their performance with the standards expected for students of their age. For more information, see About School - Student Reports
